In the "Views" tab of your visualization, click the Bar Chart thumbnail to configure a Bar Chart view for your visualization.
The configuration window will appear with the settings on the left and a preview on the right. The preview will automatically update as you make edits.
There are three tabs in the settings on the left: "Controls", "Annotations" and "Descriptions".
The "Controls" tab lets you configure how your data will appear in your visualization. This tab includes the following sections:
- Simple Bar Chart Options
- Chart Orientation
- Group Bars
- Show Axis Sort Menu
- Configure Menus
Turn on the "Simple Bar Chart Options" toggle when your dataset is aggregate data. This will display a different set of controls for your Bar Chart. Aggregate data is data that includes only Number fields, or a single Text field in addition to other fields (Date, Number, Percent). (For more information on individual and aggregate data refer to Preparing your data for Gist.)
The "Chart Orientation" toggle switches between a column chart and a bar chart.
Turning on "Group Bars" will display the bars grouped by two or more fields that you can specify in the drop-down menu that appears below the toggle when turned on.
Turning on the "Show Axis Sort Menu" toggle will give users the ability to sort the Bar Chart by the X Axis or Y Axis variables specified in the "Sort By" menu (see below).
"Configure Menus" is where you can edit the fields users will have access to in your view. For each option selected in the drop-down menu you will find a list of fields. Select the checkboxes to show or hide fields in the corresponding menu of your view, and click the home icon to determine the initial setting for your view. (To edit the field name, return to the fields tab in the main menu of your visualization.)
In the drop-down menu you can select these options:
- X Axis: Controls how your data will be shown on the horizontal axis.
- Y Axis: Controls how your data will be shown on the vertical axis. This setting accepts Number fields only.
- Stack By: Sets the fields that will be used to create a stacked bar chart.
- Group By: Pertains to Date fields in your visualization. When the Date fields are added to the X Axis, the "Group By" menu will sort the data by day, month or year.
- Sort By: Determines the axes to sort on if the "Show Axis Sort Menu" toggle is turned on.
The "Annotations" tab lets you add annotations to your view. You can add overlay text which appears at the top left of the chart. You can also add benchmarks that overlay a dashed line and label over your chart at the Y Axis level that you specify.
The "Descriptions" tab finally lets you add a description and meta-description to your view. The description will appear at the top of the view and is a good way of orienting users to what they can hope to take away from the view. The meta-description lets you add a write-up of the key takeaways from your chart for screen readers.
Once your visualization is complete click "Done" to return to the "Views" tab in the main menu of your visualization. Make sure to click "Save" on the next screen to save your edits, or click "Revert" to undo.
