In the "Views" tab of your visualization, click the Grouped Gallery thumbnail to configure a Grouped Gallery view for your visualization.
The configuration window will appear with the settings on the left and a preview on the right. The preview will automatically update as you make edits.
There are three tabs in the settings on the left: "Controls", "Visuals" and "Descriptions".
The "Controls" tab lets you configure how your data will appear in your visualization.
"Configure Menus" is where you can edit the fields users will have access to in your view. For each option selected in the drop-down menu you will find a list of fields. Select the checkboxes to show or hide fields in the corresponding menu of your view, and click the home icon to determine the initial setting for your view. (To edit the field name, return to the fields tab in the main menu of your visualization.)
In the drop-down menu you can select these options:
- Group By Duration: Pertains to Date fields in your visualization. Your data will be grouped by the fields you select ("Decade", "Year", "Month", "Week" and "Day").
- Group By Column: Pertains to Text fields in your visualization. Your data will be grouped by the categorical fields you select.
- Group By Range: Pertains to Numeric fields in your visualization. Your data will be grouped by the range you select in the menu ("10000s", "1000s", "100s", "10s").
- Sort By: Determines the fields to sort on and the order your tiles will appear in. In the Grouped Gallery, data is always displayed in ascending order in each time-range grouping.
The "Visuals" tab lets you configure your Grouped Gallery by displaying color-coded tiles or including icons for categories in your data. See below for instructions on how to configure these options.
The "Descriptions" tab finally lets you add a description and meta-description to your view. The description will appear at the top of the view and is a good way of orienting users to what they can hope to take away from the view. The meta-description lets you add a write-up of the key takeaways from your chart for screen readers.
Changing the title and adding images to tiles
By default, a Grouped Gallery view will display basic tiles. Basic tiles are shown as gray boxes containing the first initial from the title of each item. First, you can configure the title that appears in each tile. Second, to make your tiles more visual, you have several options; you can either add images, you can add icons, or you can color-code the backgrounds. The latter two options are handled in the "Visuals" tab (see below). Here we will focus on configuring the title for each item and adding images.
To change the name shown in the tiles in the Grouped Gallery view, you need to return to the main "Views" tab. Simply click "Done" to go back. In the "Views" tab, click "General Settings". This will open a window where you can configure settings that span across all your views.
On the first tab ("View Options"), you will see two drop-down menus. The first dropdown is used to set the title for each item. The second dropdown is used to set images in your visualization, by specifying the field that contains image URLs (a web address containing the image, see below). The title is always set to a specific field in your dataset, usually the first, while the image drop-down is blank by default.
Changing the title is easy—simply select another field. This field will now be treated as the title across all views.
The image drop-down requires links to images online that Gist can parse. Images can be in JPG, PNG or GIF formats. Make sure that the selected field actually contains image URLs. Here is an example: http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/thumb/2/21/001Bulbasaur.png/250px-001Bulbasaur.png
Changing the image drop-down will require processing your changes after you exit the "General Settings" window. You should see a "Save" button at the top right of your screen—click it to process the images.
Processing images can take a while depending on the size of your dataset. For very large datasets, you can exit your browser window or tab and come back to your visualization later—Gist will send an email once the image processing is completed.
After your images have been successfully processed, you can go back into the Grouped Gallery to see them displayed in the tiles.
Displaying color-coded tiles
To display color-coded tiles, you first need to set up your color mappings. This can be done in the "General Settings" window. Exit the configuration window by clicking "Done", and click on "General Settings" when you are back in the views tab. Then select the "Colors" tab.
Here you can add color rules, which will make sure that specific values in your data are mapped to colors that you determine. Start by selecting a field in the menu on the left, and then select a value in the menu on the right. Click on a color in the palette below. (Note: To change the colors displayed here, go to your Team Settings).
Finally click the "Add Color Rule" button and you will see your color mapping appear above. You can delete color mappings by clicking the delete icon.
After you have set all of your color rules, click "Save" and go back to your Grouped Gallery settings. Click on the "Visuals" tab and select the "Heatmap Gallery" option. Below, you will now see options to set the field for your color mappings ("Mapping Background Color to Column Value").
Note that color backgrounds will only appear if you haven't already set an image as described above. If you have, you will need to unset the image by going back into "General Settings" and setting the image drop-down to "None".
Adding icons to your Grouped Gallery
Before you can add icons to your Grouped Gallery, you need to upload icon images to your Team. This can be done in your Team Settings. Exit the Grouped Gallery configuration, and click on the "Team Settings" tab in the left menu. Then click the "Images" tab.
At the bottom of this screen is a section called Icons. This is where you can upload images to use as icons in your visualizations. Here is an example of what this section looks like after you have uploaded a range of icons:
Now, with the icons added, you can return to your visualization and add them to your Grouped Gallery. Go the "Visuals" tab, select the "Icon Gallery" option, and select a field in the menu below "Display Icons in Tiles".
Here you can specify the values you want to map icons to, as well as selecting the icons themselves from the set of icons you have uploaded to your Team.
Like above in the color backgrounds, note that icons will only appear if you haven't already set an image as described above. If you have, you will need to unset the image by going back into "General Settings" and setting the image drop-down to "None".
